Cornish Pumphouse

Along with its thriving commercial property interests, Building Solutions also boasts a proven commitment to heritage buildings as part of its property development business. Experienced and accomplished architects are commissioned and work closely with the Heritage Property Trust and Wellington City Council to ensure the integrity and character of historic buildings is not compromised during development.

The regeneration of these buildings requires commitment and innovation – values which the team at Building Solutions have proven to have. Building Solutions have made their commitment to historic buildings clear to the city of Wellington – refusing to succumb to the “buy it and bowl it” attitude of many of their contemporaries.

One of the more publicised of Building Solutions' heritage projects was the shifting of the Cornish Pumphouse in Waihi. Building Solutions was contracted to move this 1860s concrete Cornish Pumphouse from the edge of the Martha Mine, Waihi, to a location 500m closer to Waihi township.
The building is a category 1 listed heritage building and it sat in ruins having been abandoned 60 to 70 years ago. The move was challenging and needed a high-tech and original plan.

Just imagine – a Cornish pumphouse on skis?
Building Solutions responded to the challenge with innovation and dedication. The new pumphouse now stands at its new location, seismically strengthened and no longer on a dangerous tilt.
